Two-in-one coffee mix. Two-in-one toothpaste and mouthwash. Two-in-one shampoo and conditioner. Two-in-one mobile phone and organizer. We live in a curious age when consumer products are marketed to be better because they’re essentially two products in one. But how about desserts? Sure, we’ve got cake a la mode but that’s about it. That is, until we heard of Custaroons.

Just what on earth is a custaroon? Well, it’s a mix of custard (or leche flan in more familiar terms) and macaroons (dessicated coconut and milk confection). It’s a term coined by its creator, Gigi Gaerlan, a self-confessed sweet tooth and leche flan fanatic. Hailing from a family of restaurateurs, getting into a hobby of baking sweet treats came naturally to Gigi. In a very competitive marketplace, she felt the need for a unique product she can call her original. So she mixed her liking for custard with her mom’s recipe for macaroons. At first, she just baked batches for giving away to relatives and friends. But soon, orders started trickling in. That was way back in 2000. At present, Gigi’s Custaroons are still home-baked in her kitchen in Sta Mesa. Happyfoodies samples custaroons and shares the experience.

Seems to us that summer is still here and holding. What a time for happyfoodies to be given an opportunity to sample Haagen Dazs’ nutty creations.

We were given three preparations to sample (many thanks to Haagen Dazs and especially the SM Megamall crew) – the Macadamia Nut Delight, Hawaiian Macadamia Crunch, and the Macadamia Nut Cake. Imagine the velvety, creamy goodness that Haagen Dazs is known for. Mix it with Macadamia nuts. Voila, you have a perfect recipe for going nuts.

Pardon the play of words for the title for this post. Wurst is German for sausage and that is one of our main reasons for dropping by at Donau Gourmet. But as it turned out, it’s not just the sausages that were worth coming back for in this restaurant tucked in the quieter, less-crowded part of the Makati Central Business District, at Amorsolo, in Legaspi Village.

From the outside, the place looks non-descript, nothing much differentiates it from its neighbors save for the green signage. Stepping inside is a different story. There’s the warmly-lit interiors; the refrigerated counter full of sausages and various cold cuts, another shelf of muesli, seasonings and other food stuff; and six tables at the center.

It’s been quite a while since we last stepped into Amici in Don Bosco in Makati City. Oh, we’ve always considered this restaurant that boasts of affordable, home-cooked Italian-style cuisine as a comforting constant in a constantly changing foodscape. But ever since its takeover by a new management team two years ago, we had our apprehensions. And there’s also the expansion to include a branch in SM Megamall. Did the move to professionalize the operations alter the relaxed eating experience? Or worse, change the great-tasting food we’ve always come to love?

To find out, we dropped by on a Sunday afternoon for a late lunch – a privilege not available when Amici was still run by the Salesians of Don Bosco. Obviously, this is one of the benefits of the new management as Sunday is a very nice day to avoid the big weekday office crowds. The verdict: still as lip-smacking good as ever.

When the mercury constantly hit 36 degrees or higher even on days when the rains play games with the sun, it’s just instinctive to reach for something to cool with. On an assignment in the Quezon City area, our eyes got caught by a very colorful signage and a witty name for a yogurt outlet – FYI. The acronym stands for “Frozen Yogurt Indulgence,” and one look at the items on offers suggested this can be a nice place to cool down on a hot and humid afternoon.
