Bontoc Eats | Goldfish Cafe: Fancy and Cozy

It became my temporary office in Bontoc. The cozy sofa and chairs, the tasteful interiors heavy on the travel theme coupled with beautiful photos of the rice terraces and people of the Cordilleras is truly inviting. My almost weeklong stay in Bontoc finds me at Goldfish Cafe catching up on work and the online world. For Bontoc standards, Goldfish Cafe is the fanciest cafe in town. For a town whose local coffee culture is quite predominant already how does Goldfish Cafe’s specialty coffee offerings fare?

My first time to visit Goldfish Cafe was last December 2013, almost a year when they opened. I’m glad they are still there when I got back recently and was able to try more of their offerings.

Pasta and Sandwich

They got huge servings definitely and I’m they indicated on their menu that its good for sharing. Their Pad Thai has very tasty sauce, the spice was on the mild side though and I wish it could be more nutty.

Pesto Spaghetti (P120)

Their Pesto Spaghetti has full-flavored home-made pesto. Quite good especially with the heavily buttered toast bread on the side.

Herb Chicken (P65)

For snacks do try out their Herb Chicken, one of my favorites. The sandwich really has enticing aroma and the sauce was really rich in herb flavor. The chicken chunks spread was hefty, be careful not to overspill when biting on the sandwich.

All-Day Breakfast Meals

I also tried their Tapsilog which has beef meat sourced from Baguio. There were a few chewy parts but it was moist, tender and flavorful in most servings parts. I like that they used the red rice.

Bangsilog (P120)

The Bangsilog was a surprise, they served the whole fish and was huge. It also taste good, well marinated and boneless.

Beverages

I’ve always had their Brewed Coffee (P50) with their meals. It’s strong and a bit nutty. They use coffee from Bana’s in Sagada which has a good clean taste. Still, it’s really hard to beat the local brewed coffee near the market and at the commercial center especially they come in cheap. So I’d really go for their coffee mixes, frappes and milk teas instead.

For the frappe, I had their Choco Java (P65). Very good blend of flavor in a cool beverage. Not bad for the price.

Almond Cake (P65)

Pastry

Their pastry offering changes and is dependent on what’s available. I had the Almond Cake at that time which was just okay. Cake was soft with the sweetness coming from the icing. It would be better with more shredded almonds.

Their chocolate cupcake was a bit ordinary and dry for the price.

Goldfish Cafe was a hit and miss in terms of food offerings. Their pastry can be improved on but their specialty coffee are of good value. What I definitely love is the ambiance of which really stands out. Perfect for that afternoon chats or work. Their Wifi connection at that time was pretty consistent.
