Cafe Shibuya: Delectable Toast and Gourmet Drinks

It’s not your usual toast. Cafe Shibuya has signature high toast that are 2 1/2 inches thick, topped with a single ice cream scoop or two and sprinkled with powder, fruits or chocolates depending on your desired flavors. Just looking at the variety of offerings from the menu, it’s challenging to make a choice as most look delectable. Choosing drinks was quite easy as I love coffee and matcha and they have a blend of both.

We took a table at one of the lovely small spaces Cafe Shibuya has at the Glorietta Mall.  It’s located at the center of the walkway but neatly designed as it looks cozy with faux 3D library shelf walls on the side.  There are just a few tables but it’s not bothersome to eat and have a conversation (or watch mall-goers passing by).

We got to try a couple of their toasts. Their Original Shibuya Honey Toast (Php 145 baby, Php 175 regular) is a sure pleaser. The vanilla ice cream topped toast with honey syrup has this natural balance in sweetness. We also tried the Strawberry Matcha toast (Php 195, Php 245) which has green tea ice cream, slices of strawberry and matcha powder. I really liked this combination of strawberry and matcha. It wasn’t overpowering and the strawberry lent the toast a pleasant tartness.  For both toasts, the bread was lusciously soft on the inside yet has this thin layer of crispiness outside.  Best for sharing as each toast is quite heavy.

Another afternoon snack we tried was their Three Cheese Pizza Toast (Php 195), freshly-baked bread generously topped with  cheddar, mozarella and parmesan. Aside from the cheese overload, I really liked the hint of smoky flavor.

For drinks I got to try the matcha-infused beverage, Chocolate Green Tea in the hot tea (Php 155) and the cool frappe (Php 165) versions. The hot tea was rich and thick and I loved the blending of the chocolate and strong matcha flavors. The frappe version has that deep-bodied flavor that I liked with a twist as chocolate bits add hints of cocoa goodness with every sip.

The Original Shibuya Blend (Php 95) coffee won’t disappoint coffee lovers with its distinct taste. It is full-bodied and has that strong roasted flavor.
