Sun Fong's Bowl of Bak Kut Teh Goodness

Post a Comment September 08, 2009

Sun Fong Bak Kut Teh at Imbi, Kuala Lumpur Malaysia

The constant rain and the cool weather these days made me yearn for a serving of hot soup to warm my taste buds. And fresh from my recent trip to Malaysia, one dish which taste still lingers in my head is the Bak Kut Teh (Pork Bone Tea Soup). Originally used as a therapeutic soup introduced by the Chinese, it has become a popular Malaysian dish. I first tasted the Bak Kuh Teh in Kota Kinabalu Malaysia way back. On this recent trip, our guide Marie who's also a self-confessed foodie led us to Sun Fong Restaurant, one of the famous Bak Kut Teh restauarant in Kuala Lumpur bringing in the Klang goodness in the city.

The Place
The Restaurant found in Imbi isn't your fine dining restaurant but a typical eatery with al fresco dining and also an air conditioned section upon request. With the open kitchen, diners would be able to see how their food are prepared.

The Food
We ordered their staple Bak Kut Teh on a large steaming bowl good for four. I could clearly smell the herb and spices from the broth. I poured myself some broth on a smaller bowl and tossed in a few pieces of pork bone and meat, mushrooms, vegetables and bean curd skins. I actually like the tamer and balanced flavor of ginger and some herbs in the broth . Definitely a lot better than the one I tasted in Sabah. There are condiments on hand like chili, garlic and soy sauce to adjust the flavor to one's liking. The pork meat is tender and flavorful and the bean curd skin was easy to chew.

Stewed Pork
Stewed Pork

The Yau Choi, a simple dish of blanched white cabbage bathed in sesame oil topped with fried crispy garlic is definitely one of my favorites. It has a crisp and clean taste and flavor that I really like.

The Stewed Pork with dried chili and black sauce has very tender meat but the sauce tasted a lot like our adobo. In general, it was just okay.
