When your Happyfoodies got an invite to sample Top Torikatsu, we were a bit skeptical. The market is stuffed with quick fixes and instant food that are just that — quick to prepare but admittedly, short on taste. It seems that if you’re always in a rush, you’ve got to put up with less than tasty meals.
Happily, all it took was like two minutes (add another two for the cooked fillet to cool down) to make us change our minds. Each pack has six fillets ready for a quick deep-frying. I was ready for a bit of messy mixing but really, the process was downright simple — unpack, deep-fry, cool down, enjoy. I liked both variants, classic and Cheese and Chives though for simple, straightforward eating, the second seemed a logical choice, the juicy fillet delectably flavored with bits of cheese and chives right out of the bag.
The classic variant is good to eat on its own. However, I think it is best served with your own sauce concoction (sweet sour chili sauce/oyster sauce if you prefer Chinese-style or salsa for a Mexican-inflected dish) or side dish (think of steamed/lightly buttered veggies) sans the hassle of deboning, marinating, and rolling in breadcrumbs.
Product info: Top Torikatsu is from Bounty Fresh. Available at SM Supermarkets and Hypermart, Robinsons Supermarket and Puregold in Metro Manila for the time being. Retail price is P179 per pack of six.
