Asakusa (pronounced as ah-sahk-sah) is a district in Tokyo renowned for its bustling Japanese tempura shops scene. This is where couple, Chef Jacob and fashion designer, Celine found their most memorable tempura experience in Japan. The tempura from a small and simple shop in Japan served by an old couple were one of the best they tasted that they were inspired to bring it in Manila. Hence, Asakusa: Home of Tempura was born in 2015 with its first branch at the Grove by Rockwell. Establishing itself as the tempura specialty house enjoyed by people in Pasig. Two years after, Asakusa opens its doors at Ayala Malls Vertis North to serve northerners in the Metro.
Those crisp golden tempura is one of the local Japanese favorites in the metro aside from the ramen, matcha and sushi. Tempura is at the heart of Asakusa. For starters there are set samplers to choose from. I chose the Samurai Set (P368) as it has Black Tiger Prawn, fish, squid, eggplant, squash and french beans. I like that the batter was not too thick and it wasn’t as oily. The tiger prawn was huge and taste fresh. The tempura comes in two sauces, the traditional tempura sauce the house sauce which is thicker and a little sweet.
The tempura sets also comes with rice but I prefer noodles so I upgraded to Hot Udon (P50 upgrade). Other upgrade choices are hot or cold soba. I was pleasantly surprised by this Hot Udon as the thick wheat noodles swims in a very savory broth. Bits of tempura batter adds a crispy texture. Enjoyed it so much I made sure to finish the whole bowl.
Asakusa: Home of Tempura also have other Japanese dishes in their menu. Gyoza (P198/6pcs) is a staple order for me in any restaurants and they have this juicy pan-fried dumpling.
The Tuna Salad (P208) comes in a small bowl but big in flavors. Tender and tasty tuna chunks with crunchy fresh veggies and oh so slightly sweet and spicy dressing that blends amazingly well.
I’m always a fan of green tea but Asakusa: Home of Tempura upped the flavor when they added bits of gourmet chocolate. The Valhrona Chocolate Brownies with Green Tea Ice Cream (P158) was sinfully good with its rich dark chococoloate flavor matching with the earthy goodness of the green tea.
Verdict: Very Happy!
