I know foodie friends in Singapore who has have been living there for years. So when I went there recently, they were just too happy to show me their favorite eating places. Say Singapore and you can expect chili crabs and prawns in the mix. We trooped to the back of esplanade and entered a restaurant facing the bay to discover that a really good restaurant really needs No Signboard for patrons to find their way in.
The No Signboard Seafood Restaurant started in the 70s as a hawker stall selling home-made crab dishes. It didn't took too long before word of mouth spread about how good the food is at a stall with no signboard. Fast forward to the present, No Signboard now has signature branches across Singapore. The one we dined in behind esplanade was elegant and cozy.
For starters,we had Baby Kai-lan with Oyster Sauce. I thought the oyster sauce laden vegetables were really delicious and crispy fresh. I also liked the flavorful mushroom strips.
Then there’s the Crispy Cereal Prawns. It’s the first time I have seen a prawn dish done this way. The cereal bits were crunchy sweet. The prawns were tasty, cooked in such a way that even the shells can be eaten. It’s really good.
For the main course we had Sri Lankan Chili Crab. I’m no stranger to Chili Crabs but this one was really memorable. Sri Lankan Crabs do pack a lot of meat and the sauce as we said was “heart-stoppingly” good. I also enjoyed mixing up the cereal bits and chili crabs sauce for that crunchy texture with sweet and spicy taste.
