El Union Coffee: Caffeine and Dessert Bliss at Elyu

Post a Comment August 24, 2016

I have a friend who’s known as the “Sound Check Guy”. He’s musically inclined and decided to live in La Union for good, finding he felt more at home there. He worked as a barista for a small coffee shop for a while and that’s where I first heard about El Union Coffee. This small cafe run by Kiddo and Sly sources locally grown coffee beans from around La Union. Their signature blend became a hit among the locals and tourists alike. The cafe quickly outgrew its original site and had to move to a new location along the MacArthur National Highway.

El Union Coffee Specialty Drinks

It was a post-lunch afternoon with the mid-day heat on our backs but we're still yearning for some good coffee. We drove to El Union's new place which isn't far from where the event we attended has taken place. Luckily, we found a parking slot. El Union Coffee is on the ground floor of a two-story beach bojo-style building. It is open and airy, the interior very much hip. There are only a few tables though. The upper floor is a co-sharing workspace and a yoga studio.

As it was hot, we decided to order the cold coffee. I ordered the Dirty White (Php 120) on ice, which is actually a flat white coffee drink. I thought the flavor was not flat but well-balanced. Just the right blend of coffee but not that overpowering too. Our friend had a Horchata (Php 120). It was more flavorful, and nutty with a bit of cocoa but still has that pleasant coffee blend.

Desserts

We could not leave without trying the desserts so we ordered the Indoor Smores and the Skillet Cookie.    The small portion I think is large enough for sharing. Both desserts are best served warm especially the smores where you have to dig in through all those delectable marshmallows using a graham cracker to get to the gooey chocolate goodness underneath. The Skillet Cookie is also warm and pleasant.

It's hard not to recommend El Union Coffee when visiting La Union. After all, it's not like the other coffee shops around can say they're homegrown. And of course, it's a place to drive to if you crave for excellent coffee blends, tasty desserts, and a great relaxed vibe in this part of Luzon.
