What do you do when you find yourself in Anilao on the eve of a brewing tropical storm? You pray for better weather and find other things to do while on staycation. For your Happyfoodies, it was a good excuse to food trip at the Eagle's Nest Restaurant and Bar of Eagle Point Resort, perusing the menu and asking the friendly staff for recommendations and suggestions. We haven't been anywhere around here for a long time so it was nice to find that the resort's eating venue offers a great view of the sea (roiling as we sample the fare the two days we stayed there).
Our first dinner there, we decided on sharing an order of the Crispy Pata (good enough for three except if you have our appetite). Before the main viand arrived, we had Greek Salad, a generous helping of sliced bell peppers, cucumber, onions and black olives served on a bed of crispy lettuce leaves served in a pool of piquant vinaigrette, the saltiness provided by chunks of feta cheese. Yum yum. The Thai chicken broth is also flavorful, providing warmth on a cold, rainy evening. Wanting to wash away the taste of the rather hefty serving of Crispy Pata from our taste buds, we ordered coffee along with the Calamansi Pie.
The pie was a revelation, a strong incentive to drop by and dive into a serving of dessert in this corner of Anilao, Batangas. While the graham cracker crust could be a bit more set and solid in texture, the creamy, citrus-sy pie filling was, well, very creamy and yummy. The tartness of the dayap (native lemon) provides a palate-tickling contrast to the sweetness of the frozen cream.
Tropical storm Gorio arrived the next day so we had to stay land-locked for most of the day. The better to sample more goodies from the kitchen. In non-chronological order, we had the bulalo /bone marrow soup (almost obligatory since this is Batangas after all), a pizza for mid-afternoon snack as well as spicy gambas for appetizer. Our kind host, Nikki, had the kitchen prepare a most unusual dessert come dinner time -- ube halaya (purple yam) wrapped in wonton wrappers and deep-fried to a crisp. Served with a creamy mango sauce, it seems to build on the dessert impressions we had the previous night.
It was a stormy staycation but you can find your taste of adventure if you look for it. At the Eagle's Nest, it's a good reason to linger in the dining hall and dive into the menu offerings.
