Kainan sa Dalampasigan: Nasugbu’s Charming Seafood Restaurant

Dalampasigan, a tagalog word which means “seashore” and it was something I was expecting to find when we arrived at Kainan sa Dalampasigan in Nasugbu, Batangas. There was no seashore nor a view of the sea but we weren’t disappointed. Instead, we found a gem of a restaurant, like a secret garden, breezy and exuding with Filipino hospitality and charm.

Nomama: Of Miso Butter Dreams and Hearty Ramen

Much has been written about Nomama‘s artisanal ramen that I’ve expected little else probably worth sampling on a visit to shoot for a magazine.  So the Kitayama Flank Steak came as a very pleasant surprise.  It took me over an hour to finish my to-shoot-list and I expected the steak to be a bit tough after an hour of sitting on its dish but no, it was very, very tender (made me wonder how much more tender it was hot off the grill).  The liberal use of Miso butter lent an irresistible, exquisite taste so much so that even if I just had a bowl of ramen, I managed to finish the steak by myself.  The crispy tofu slices are a nice foil to the meat, not that my taste buds quickly grew satiated to the flavor.

When in Davao, can’t resist Luz Kinilaw

We concluded our recent Mindanao trip with an overnight in Davao City.  With limited time on our hands, the temptation to cram never entered our mind as we took our sweet time shopping for durian candies, malongs and ref magnets at Aldevinco before heading out for dinner to where else but Luz Kinilaw.  We came on a midweek evening but the place is still half-filled with eager diners.  Funny but the times I’ve eaten here, I’ve never ordered their kinilaw (fish or seafood cooked with only vinegar or a similar souring/acidic liquid) as the biggest attraction for me was and is always, the Inihaw na Panga ng Tuna (Grilled Tuna Jaw).

Cantonese as Fine as Jasmine

Just hearing the name of this widely cultivated flower calls to mind adjectives like exquisite, delicate and versatile. It is a flower of many attributes beyond its beautiful form.  To have a restaurant bearing its name means having big shoes to fill. Good thing that Jasmine Restaurant found at New World Hotel lived up to its name, serving some of the finest Cantonese Cuisine in the metro.

Taal Bistro: a hearty lunch in a heritage town

We came to Taal Town in Batangas to revisit this heritage town and bring home some captures.  But like in previous out-of-town trips, we had a hidden agenda: to eat something out of the ordinary.  We prepared for the shoot but we weren’t able to research well in advance where it’s good to eat.  Good thing the kind lady seller we brought some panucha from at the Basilica de San Martin de Tours went out of her way to show us Bistro Taal.  It was just 5 or so minutes away from the Basilica and while it’s not really a bistro in the real sense of the word, we thought we had a hearty lunch alright.

Great food needs No Signboard

I know foodie friends in Singapore who has have been living there for years.  So when I went there recently, they were just too happy to show me their favorite eating places. Say Singapore and you can expect chili crabs and prawns in the mix. We trooped to the back of esplanade and entered a restaurant facing the bay to discover that a really good restaurant really needs No Signboard for patrons to find their way in.

Enjoying the Sea Breeze in Virac

One of the perks of eating out of town is the chance to taste unpretentious food.  Not to say we’re jaded by city food but there are times when one would just like to sit down to no-frills fare.  So when your happyfoodies went to Virac in Catanduanes, we had to ask the locals where they’d prefer to eat out. One place that keeps popping up is Sea Breeze Restaurant.  That it’s mentioned in Jens Peters’ Philippine Guide only whetted our appetite to give it a try.
